Lately, I have been thinking about the difference between compassion and duty, mostly because I am starting to realise how often the two are treated as the same thing in families like ours.
In many Indian families, responsibility is almost inherited without anyone formally handing it to you. There is no ceremony, no conversation, no moment where someone sits you down and says, “One day, all of this may become yours.” You just grow up absorbing it. Parents raise the children, the children grow up, and eventually the direction of care is expected to reverse. You help financially, you show up, you become involved in decisions, and you somehow become part of the machinery that keeps the family running.
When you are younger, you do not really see that machinery.
You just live inside it.
You know who gets angry easily, who avoids confrontation, who makes the decisions, who worries about money, who keeps the peace and who quietly cleans up whatever mess is left behind. You do not call them patterns because they are simply normal to you. That is just how home works.
Then comes adulthood and suddenly everything looks different.
You start noticing who has been carrying what all these years. You begin to understand that some “family problems” did not appear overnight. Some are the result of choices that were postponed, conversations that were avoided, plans that were never made, or responsibilities that everyone assumed somebody else would eventually take care of. And the uncomfortable part is realising that sometimes, that somebody is now you.
That is where compassion and duty begin to blur for me.
Compassion is easy to understand. If someone you love is struggling, you want them to be okay. You want to help where you can. You worry, you care, you show up.
Duty is quieter.
Duty sits somewhere behind all of that and says, “Of course you have to do it. They are your parents.”
There is a lot packed into that sentence.
In Indian families especially, sacrifice is almost sacred. We grow up hearing about what our parents gave up for us, how hard they worked, what they endured and how much they provided. Much of that deserves gratitude. But somewhere along the way, gratitude can begin to feel like a debt that never really gets paid off.
You start wondering whether being a good daughter means always saying yes.
Whether setting limits means you are selfish.
Whether choosing your own life means you are somehow failing the people who gave you one.
And the older I get, the less convinced I am that love is supposed to work that way. Because family relationships are rarely clean enough for that.
Parents can love their children and still hurt them. They can provide in one area and fail badly in another. They can sacrifice for you and still make choices that eventually become your burden too. Growing older does not magically erase any of that, and neither does illness, ageing or vulnerability.
You still remember the whole story.
The good parts. The difficult parts. The things they carried for you, and the things you had to learn to carry for yourself.
Maybe that is why family responsibility can feel so emotionally messy. You are not responding only to what is happening today. Sometimes you are responding to years of history sitting quietly underneath the present situation.
And now, at thirty something, I find myself noticing my own role in all of this too.
I have always been the sort of person who goes into solution mode. If something goes wrong, my brain immediately starts organising. Lately, I have started catching myself before I do that.
Not because I do not care. But because I am finally asking a question I probably should have asked years ago.
Just because I am capable of carrying something, does that automatically make it mine to carry?
That question becomes very uncomfortable when family is involved, because boundaries are not always received as boundaries. Sometimes they are interpreted as disrespect. Sometimes as ingratitude. Sometimes as selfishness.
And sometimes, the easiest thing is to just say yes, do everything, keep the peace and deal with your resentment privately later.
I do not think I want to live like that.
I want there to be room for compassion without self erasure. I want to be able to care about the people I love without automatically becoming responsible for every choice, consequence and crisis that enters their lives. I want help to still feel like help, not like a role I inherited before I was old enough to question it.
Maybe this is one of the stranger parts of growing up too.
You spend so much time trying to understand who you are, only to realise that understanding yourself also means looking properly at the family you came from. Not necessarily with anger or blame, but with clearer eyes.
You begin to notice the roles everyone has been playing, the expectations that were never spoken aloud and the sacrifices that became so normal nobody thought to question them. You notice the things that have quietly travelled from one generation to another, not because anyone deliberately chose them, but because that was simply how things had always been done.
And once you notice these things, it becomes difficult not to wonder what happens next.
There will probably be things I choose to carry because I love the people involved. There may be things I carry because circumstances leave little room for anything else. And there may also be things I eventually decide were never mine to begin with.
I do not know what falls into which category yet.
Perhaps that is what I am still figuring out. Not whether I love my family enough, but what that love is supposed to ask of me. Because growing up means inheriting many things from the people who came before us.
I am only beginning to realise that we might also get to decide what we keep.
